I am currently a R&D Manager within Agilent's Quadrupole LC/MS group. Whether it be by teaching fundamentals of the art or by producing good products – my ultimate goal is help the world’s researchers produce accurate and authentic results through mass spectrometry.
The topics and views expressed here are solely my own and do not reflect the company I work for. In this website, you will find a collection of my public work with additional insight into the background of each study or topic.
My Ph.D was obtained at the University of the Pacific in the Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences Program where I studied as a mass spectrometrist and ion chemist. Under the instruction of O. David Sparkman and Jianhua Ren, I learned to utilize a wide range of mass spectrometry instrumentation and techniques for investigating ion fragmentation pathways and chemical reactivity fundamentals.
As part of my graduate training, a primary duty was to act as a research assistant in the Pacific Mass Spectrometry Facility, providing GC/MS and LC/MS analysis services locally. During that time, I ran all instrumentation, designed SOP workflows, and carried out “advanced” maintenance. As I reached my later graduate years, I eventually became responsible for the facility’s day-to-day operation logistics as the “Head Research Assistant” until my graduation in 2016.
Immediately after graduation I started my professional career as a Post-Doc then full-time as a Career research chemist in the quadrupole LC/MS R&D team. As a core team member, I was a major contributor in all aspects of multiple quadrupole LC/MS product launches (Ultivo, MSD/ IQ, G6470A, and G6495C).
Due to my wide array of involvement in the LC/MS development process (Hardware, Software, Marketing) and passion for communicating the strength of mass spectrometry, I decided to try my hand at influencing product marketing and commercialization more directly… This brings us to today, where I am now the Product Manager of the instruments I helped develop.
I was born & raised in Oahu, Hawaii. After my high school graduation, I moved to California for college. I decided to stay for graduate school and subsequently, my career in industry. My biggest interests outside of work are artisan cooking techniques, quantitative finance, strategic investing, science-fiction, and playing guitar.
The problem, often not discovered until late in life, is that when you look for things in life like love, meaning, motivation, it implies they are sitting behind a tree or under a rock. The most successful people in life recognize, that in life they create their own love, they manufacture their own meaning, they generate their own motivation. For me, I am driven by two main philosophies, know more today about the world than I knew yesterday. And lessen the suffering of others. You’d be surprised how far that gets you.
